Letter: Smith will prioritize NYS, Brown School

Excerpted from Daily News of Newburyport (link)

“To the editor:

I am writing in support of Owen Smith’s candidacy to represent Ward 5 on Newburyport’s City Council. My support of Owen began with a conversation at my front door when he took the time to introduce himself and speak about his choice to run for City Council to further his commitment to our city’s future.

I believe it is time to bring a new voice to the City Council who understands that process and progress can and do co-exist. As a community, we need to make a commitment to supporting our younger and older residents with forward movement on projects supportive of them. With 15 years of infrastructure and public service experience, Owen brings practical experience to the process of project completion.

As a father who has chosen to raise his children in Newburyport, Owen brings an appreciation for the needs of our children in an increasingly complicated and changing world.

Our young people are the future, and we need someone who understands that making progress in meeting their challenges and supporting their dreams will benefit our entire community. Moving forward with providing a new, permanent home for Newburyport Youth Services is critical, and is one of Owen Smith’s priorities.

Our senior population needs to feel secure that they will be able to continue to live in the community they love, without being forced to relocate due to the astronomical cost of housing in Newburyport. Moving forward with the conversion of the Brown School into affordable senior housing is something we should all be able to agree on. Stalling the project with unnecessary competing interests is not in service to the residents we need to support.

I hope you will join me in casting a vote for Owen Smith as City Council member for Ward 5!”
